The specialty of veterinary practice was established by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) - and is sanctioned by the American Veterinary Medical Association - to set standards in advanced professionalism in veterinary practice.
The objective of ABVP is to promote and recognize high standards in the art and science of veterinary practice. By awarding Diplomate status, the ABVP recognizes individuals who have demonstrated that they are qualified to fill a unique and specific role in the delivery of "state of the art" veterinary service.
Dr. Elizabeth O'Brien is one of a very small group of doctors who have earned the title "Diplomate" from the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP).
This means that she underwent a very long, very difficult process of additional studies and examination - a process that can take up to three years to complete.
Diplomates must prepare and recertify in their specialty every 10 years. ABVP Diplomates have proven knowledge and expertise above and beyond what is required to practice veterinary medicine.
By having your animals seen by an ABVP Diplomate, you are making sure that they receive expert treatment. By achieving diplomatic status, your veterinarian has proven a strong commitment to providing the best possible care.
